Hello, this is _hiroyuki.ta. This time, I went on a motorcycle tour from central Tokyo to Akechidaira Observatory in Tochigi Prefecture. Akechidaira Observation Deck is one of Nikko’s most famous scenic spots, offering a panoramic view of Mt. Nantai, Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and more. In this article, we will introduce what Akechidaira Observation Deck is, the route we took to get there, what kind of highlights there are, and information on motorcycle parking.
What is Akechidaira Observatory?
Akechidaira Observatory is an observation deck located in Hosoo-cho, Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, at an altitude of 1373m. It takes about 3 minutes to get there by riding the ropeway from Akechidaira Ropeway Station, which is almost at the top of Daini Irohazaka. From the observation deck, you can see the mountains of Nikko, Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and more. The beauty of the autumn leaves is especially striking in autumn. Additionally, from the observation deck there is a promenade along Chanoki Square, where you can enjoy hiking and trekking.
Route to Akechidaira Observation Deck
This time, I took the Shuto Expressway Inner Loop Line from central Tokyo and entered Shuto Expressway 6 at Edobashi JCT. After that, I transferred from Kosuge JCT to the Shuto Expressway Chuo Loop Line and entered the Shuto Expressway Kawaguchi Line at Kohoku JCT. From the Kawaguchi Line of the Metropolitan Expressway, enter the Tohoku Expressway and take the Utsunomiya IC onto the Nikko Utsunomiya Road. I drove on Nikko Utsunomiya Road, exited at Kiyotaki IC, and entered National Route 120. I drove along National Route 120 to Hosoo Town.
Highlights of Akechidaira Observatory
From the Akechidaira Observation Deck, you can enjoy the natural charm of Nikko. What is especially eye-catching is the Kegon Falls that flows down from Lake Chuzenji. It is one of Japan’s three great waterfalls, with a basin that reaches 97 meters. Water spray from waterfalls can sometimes create rainbows. In addition, Lake Chuzenji is one of the largest dam lakes in Tochigi Prefecture, and there are sightseeing boats and rental boats on the lakeshore where you can enjoy cruising. The view of Mt. Nantai and the surrounding mountains reflected on the surface of the lake is breathtaking. Mt. Nantai is a volcano with an altitude of 2,486 meters and is considered the principal image of Rinnoji Temple in Nikko. It has been an object of worship since ancient times, and there is a shrine at the top of the mountain.
Motorcycle parking lot at Akechidaira Observation Deck
Akechidaira Ropeway Station has a large paid parking lot. There is also a motorcycle parking lot, but it is limited so we recommend getting there early. In addition, there is a service in which parking is free for round trip users of the ropeway, so please present your parking ticket when purchasing your ticket. It is about a 1 minute walk from the parking lot to the ropeway station.
