The Chibanian is a newly named geological period that covers the period from approximately 774,000 years ago to 129,000 years ago.
This period is characterized by a reversal of the Earth’s magnetic field.
Chibanian was given its name because this inversion phenomenon was first discovered in the strata along the Yoro River in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture.
Route to Chibanyan
Chibanian is located approximately 2 hours by car from central Tokyo.
From Tokyo/Hachioji
Go north on National Route 20, take Ken-o Expressway from Ichihara Tsurumai IC, go via Norikura Tunnel, get off at Ichihara IC, and proceed east on National Route 16.
When you see the Chibanian sign, turn right and head towards the Chibanian exhibition hall.
From Tokyo/Shinjuku
Take the Chuo Expressway from Takaido IC to Chuo Expressway, exit at Takao IC, take the Ken-O Expressway from Ichihara Tsurumai IC, go via Norikura Tunnel, exit at Ichihara IC, and proceed east on National Route 16.
When you see the Chibanian sign, turn right and head towards the Chibanian exhibition hall.
