What is Shiraito Falls?

Shiraito Falls is a waterfall located in Hashidate, Kosuge Village, Kitatsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture, and is approximately 20 meters high and approximately 50 meters wide. The waterfall got its name from the white appearance of the droplets when the water hits the rock surface. Shiraito Falls has been selected as one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls, and is also designated as a national scenic spot and natural monument. The waterfall, whose appearance changes with the seasons, is popular with many tourists and photographers.

Route to Shiraito Falls

The starting point was Nihonbashi in central Tokyo.

First, I took the Shuto Expressway No. 6 from Hakozaki Minatobashi Dori, then entered the Chuo Expressway via the Tokyo Metropolitan Loop Line and Route 4. I took the Chuo Expressway, got off at Uenohara IC, passed National Route 20, Prefectural Routes 33, and 18, and then entered National Route 139. After driving on National Route 139 for a while, we turned onto Prefectural Route 508 and arrived at Shiraito Falls.

On this tour, I enjoyed riding for about 3 and a half hours. There are tolls on the Shuto Expressway and Chuo Expressway along the way, but if you use the expressway you can make a day trip, and above all, it’s a smooth ride.

On the other hand, on national and prefectural roads, the scenery is beautiful and the ride is pleasant, but there are many curves and hills, so you have to be careful about driving safely. Shiraito Falls is one of Japan’s three most famous waterfalls and is very impressive. The spray of water is cool and feels good. If you’re touring on a Harley, this is a recommended course.

Highlights of Shiraito Falls

When you arrive at Shiraito Falls, it takes about 5 minutes on foot from the parking lot to reach the waterfall basin. From the basin of the waterfall, you can see the white spray of water hitting the rock surface. The water of the waterfall comes from the groundwater of Kosuge Village, and is very cold and clean. The area around the waterfall basin is surrounded by trees and flowers, allowing you to feel the sounds and scents of nature. I spent some time listening to the sound of the waterfall and taking photos near the basin.

Shiraito Falls motorcycle parking lot

Shiraito Falls has a parking lot exclusively for motorcycles. The parking lot is located about 300 meters away from the waterfall basin. It takes about 5 minutes on foot from the parking lot to the waterfall basin. Parking is free, but space is limited, so we recommend arriving early. I went on a weekday morning, so there was space in the parking lot, but it can get crowded on weekends and holidays. There are no locks or chains to secure your bike in the parking lot, so you may want to bring your own or attach one to your bike. Also, there are no lifeguards or security guards in the parking lot, so be sure to carry any valuables with you.
