Kokufutsu Shrine is a shrine located at the eastern end of the Kokufutsu coast. This is an old shrine that is said to have been built during the Heian period, and has been revered as the first shrine of Sagami Province. The deities enshrined here are Ōmi no Mikoto and Sukuhikona no Mikoto, who are worshiped as the gods of maritime safety, the protection of the fishing industry, and the gods of learning and entertainment. The shrine grounds include the main shrine, worship hall, and torii gate, which have been designated as national important cultural properties. Additionally, every July, the “Kokufutsu Boat Festival” is held, where boats are decorated on the sea. This festival is a traditional event that has been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of the country, and is a time to express gratitude for the blessings of the sea and pray for a bountiful catch and safety at sea.
