Sanehara Cherry Blossom Row is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot located in the Sanehara district of Takegawa-cho, Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Approximately 200 Yoshino cherry trees are planted on the side of the road, and when they are in full bloom, you can stroll through a snowstorm of cherry blossoms with the lingering snow of the Southern Alps, including Mt. Kaikomagatake, in the background. It is said that it began in the 1950s when people who settled here planted trees in hopes of developing the land. Nearby are the natural monument “Yamataka Jindai Cherry Blossoms” and a field of approximately 70,000 tulips. It is also home to pheasants, and if you are lucky, you may be able to spot the national bird.

Route to Mahara cherry blossom trees

I started from central Tokyo. First, I took the Metropolitan Expressway Inner Loop Line/C1 and headed towards Shinjuku. I took Shuto Expressway No. 4 Shinjuku Line/Route 4 and transferred to the Chuo Expressway. I drove about 140 kilometers on the Chuo Expressway and got off at Sutama IC. From there, we turned right onto the Kiyosato Line/National Route 141, and via Prefectural Routes 611 and 612, we arrived at Mahara Sakura Namiki Dori. The journey took about two and a half hours.

The highlight of Mahara Cherry Blossom Trees is definitely the cherry blossoms. The cherry blossom-colored tunnel that stretches for about 750 meters is a sight to behold. Mt. Kaikomagatake and the Southern Alps, which can sometimes be seen between the rows of cherry blossom trees, are also beautiful. When the wind blows, a snowstorm of cherry blossoms flies up. I brought my camera with me, so I took pictures from various angles. It is especially spectacular when you take a photo of Mt. Kaikomagatake and the cherry blossoms together.

Specialty products are also sold around the Mahara cherry blossom trees.

Motorcycle parking lot along Mahara Sakura Avenue

There is a motorcycle parking lot at Mahara Sakura Namiki. There is a free municipal parking lot (about 10 spaces) in the middle of the cherry blossom trees. On the west side is the Weeping Sakura Parking Lot (approx. 40 spaces). It’s also free.
