Daikanyama Observation Deck is an observation deck located near the summit of Mt. Daikan, which has an altitude of 1,011m. Mount Taikan was named as a place with a spectacular view of Mt. Fuji, which was loved by the Japanese painter Yokoyama Taikan. From the observation deck, you can see Lake Ashi and Hakone’s somma, and Mt. Fuji beyond. Especially in the early morning or evening on sunny days, you can see fantastic sights such as a sea of clouds and Mt. Fuji. From spring to summer, you can also enjoy the sunset in the direction of Mt. Fuji. The observation deck has free parking and the Anest Iwata Sky Lounge, which has a cafe and food court. The Sky Lounge also sells specialty products such as Hakone’s famous black eggs and hot spring manju.

This time, I started from central Tokyo and entered the Tomei Expressway via the Metropolitan Expressway Inner Loop Line and the Metropolitan Expressway No. 3 Shibuya Line. On the Tomei Expressway, take the Atsugi IC, transfer to the Odawara-Atsugi Road, and exit at the Odawara Nishi IC. From Odawara Nishi IC, take National Route 135 towards Yugawara. There is an entrance to the Hakone Turnpike along the way, but this time I chose the route that is free. From National Route 135, I entered Prefectural Route 75 (Tsubaki Line) and entered Anest Iwata Turnpike Hakone (Hakone Turnpike) at Yugawaramachi Kajiya. Hakone Turnpike is a toll road, but you can ride a motorcycle for 200 yen. Hakone Turnpike is also known as a famous spot for autumn leaves driving, and although it has many curves and hills, it is an easy and fun road to drive on. After driving about 14km on Hakone Turnpike, you will arrive at Daikanyama Observation Deck.

Once you arrive at Daikanyama Observation Deck, first enjoy the spectacular view of Lake Ashi and Mt. Fuji. The observation deck offers a 360-degree panorama, and you can see from the north to the south. When viewed from the north, Mt. Fuji towers over Lake Ashi. You can also see the Southern Alps to the right of Mt. Fuji. When viewed from the south, you can see Mt. Amagi and Mt. Omuro in Izu, Oshima and Kozushima in the Izu Seven Islands, Miura Peninsula, and Boso Peninsula. There is also a swing made of cypress called “Hakone Swing” at the observation deck. We also recommend riding on a swing and taking photos with Mt. Fuji in the background. There is also a bronze statue of Yokoyama Taikan a little further away from the observation deck. In front of the bronze statue is a painting of Mt. Fuji drawn by Yokoyama Taikan. From the observation deck, you can see for yourself the spectacular view of Mt. Fuji that was loved by Yokoyama Taikan.

Motorcycle parking lot at Daikanyama Observatory

There is a free parking lot at Daikanyama Observatory. The parking lot is next to the observation deck, with a paved space spread out to the side. Motorcycles can be parked at the edge of the parking lot. From the parking lot, it is about a 1-minute walk to the observation deck. The parking lot is spacious, but it can get crowded during holidays and the autumn foliage season.
