Oyama Senmaida is a beautiful landscape of rice terraces that has been selected as an important cultural landscape in Japan. Oyama Senmaida is a landscape consisting of approximately 375 rice terraces located in the Hiratsuka district of Kamogawa City. Traditional agriculture has been carried out since the Edo period, and the scenery changes with the seasons: the blue sky and mountains reflected in the water in the spring, the green ears of rice in the summer, the golden rice harvest in the fall, and the snow covered in the winter. In addition, there are many historical buildings such as old folk houses, shrines and temples that remain around the rice terraces, giving you a sense of the traditional Japanese atmosphere. Oyama Senmaida was designated as an important cultural landscape of Japan in 2016. This designation indicates landscapes that have high historical and cultural value and need to be preserved and utilized, and there are only about 100 such locations nationwide. Route to Oyama Senmaida
This time, I toured by motorcycle from central Tokyo to Oyama Senmaida. My favorite car is a Harley-Davidson FLSB Sport Glide. I crossed the Sumida River Ohashi Bridge from Suitengu Street and entered the Metropolitan Expressway Route 9 Fukagawa Line. I transferred from Shuto Expressway No. 9 Fukagawa Line to Shuto Expressway Wangan Line and passed by Tokyo Bay Aqua Line. The Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line is a 15km long road that consists of an ocean section and an undersea tunnel section, allowing you to cross Tokyo Bay. You can enjoy a spectacular view of the sea and sky at the sea level, and at the undersea tunnel you can experience what it feels like to be in an underwater tunnel. After passing the Tokyo Bay Aqua Line, I entered the Higashi-Kanto Expressway Tateyama Line. This road allows you to fully enjoy the nature and culture of Minamiboso, and there are many sightseeing spots along the way, such as beaches, hot springs, and flower fields. I got off at Kyonan Yasuda IC and entered Prefectural Route 34. This road is called Nagasakaido, and it continues for about 20km from Kyonan Town to Kamogawa City. This road has beautiful scenery sandwiched between the mountains and the sea, and has many curves, making it an irresistible road for motorcyclists. As I drove along this road, I felt that I was getting closer to Oyama Senmaida.
I arrived at Oyama Senmaida. The view of the rice terraces spreading out in front of us was breathtaking. First, I went to the observation deck in the center of the rice terraces. From the observation deck, you can see the entire rice terrace. The shape and layout of the rice terraces are carefully designed to match the topography and water source, making them look like works of art. As I gazed at the rice terraces from the observation deck, I thought about the history and culture of agriculture. Next, I took a walk around the rice terraces. There are many historical buildings such as old folk houses, shrines and temples around the rice terraces. While touring the shrines and ponds, I was able to learn about the beliefs and lifestyles of the people who have protected this area since ancient times.
Oyama Senmaida does not have a dedicated parking lot for motorcycles, but there are several parking lots for cars.

Special products of Oyama Senmaida
Oyama Senmaida sells special products such as rice and vegetables grown in the rice terraces. Among them, the most recommended is a brand of rice called “Daisen Area Terrace Rice.” This rice is a Koshihikari variety grown without pesticides and organic fertilizers, and is characterized by its stickiness and sweetness. Additionally, the water from the rice terraces is rich in natural minerals, which brings out the flavor of the rice.
