Lake Tanzawa is a dam lake completed in 1953, and is used for hydroelectric power generation and irrigation water supply. The lake area is approximately 1.7 square kilometers and the maximum depth is approximately 40 meters. There are campgrounds, rest houses, and walking trails along the lake, where you can enjoy activities such as fishing, boating, and trekking. In addition, the scenery is beautiful in each season, and many tourists visit especially during the autumn leaves and cherry blossom season.

Route to Lake Tanzawa

I set out on my beloved Harley-Davidson FLSB Sport Glide. It is about 130 kilometers from central Tokyo to Lake Tanzawa, and the journey takes about two and a half hours. I could have used the expressway, but this time I decided to take the national and prefectural roads and enjoy the scenery. Below is the route I took.

  • From Chuo Ward, take the Shuto Expressway Inner Loop Line/C1 and head toward Yokohama.
  • At Tanimachi JCT, transfer to Shuto Expressway No. 3 Shibuya Line/Route 3 and proceed to Tomei Expressway.
  • Exit the Tomei Expressway at Oi Matsuda IC and enter National Route 255.
  • Enter National Route 246 from National Route 255.
  • From National Route 246, enter Prefectural Route 76.
  • Drive along Prefectural Route 76 and arrive at Lake Tanzawa.

When we arrived at Lake Tanzawa, we first took a break at a rest house. The rest house sells local specialties and souvenirs, and I purchased Lake Tanzawa’s specialty, grilled sweetfish with salt.''Salt-grilled sweetfish” is fresh sweetfish seasoned with salt and grilled over charcoal, making it aromatic and juicy.

After the break, we took a walk along the lakeside promenade. The promenade is approximately 4 kilometers long and allows you to go around the lake. From the promenade, you can enjoy the beauty of nature, such as the reflection of the mountains and sky on the surface of the lake, creatures such as waterfowl and fish, and plants such as flowers and trees. I carried my camera and took pictures as I walked.

Motorcycle parking lot at Lake Tanzawa

At Lake Tanzawa, there is a “Lake Tanzawa Parking Lot” next to the rest house, which you can use for free. However, the number of seats is limited, so we recommend arriving early.

Summary

This time, I went on a motorcycle tour from central Tokyo to Lake Tanzawa in Shizuoka Prefecture. Lake Tanzawa is a dam lake rich in nature, and I think it’s the perfect spot for riding a bike. There are many ways to enjoy the area, such as tasting local specialties at the rest house, enjoying the scenery from the promenade, and from the observation deck. There are also two motorcycle parking lots, which is convenient. If you have never been to Lake Tanzawa, please give it a visit. I would like to go again.
