What is Tsumago-juku?

Tsumago-juku is the 42nd post town on Nakasendo and is currently located in Nagiso-cho, Kiso-gun, Nagano Prefecture.

During the Edo period, the town prospered as a post town on the Nakasendo route connecting Edo and Kyoto, and even today, the townscape retains traces of that time.

Route to Tsumago-juku

Tsumago-juku is located about two and a half hours by car from central Tokyo.

From Tokyo/Hachioji

Go north on National Route 20, change from the Chuo Expressway at Takaido IC to the Nagano Expressway, get off at Okaya IC, go south on National Route 19, and continue west on National Route 20.

When you see the Tsumago-juku sign, turn right and head towards Tsumago-juku.

From Tokyo/Shinjuku

Take the Chuo Expressway from Takaido IC to Nagano Expressway, get off at Okaya IC, go south on National Route 19, and go west on National Route 20.

Highlights of Tsumago-juku

The cobblestone streets are lined with whitewashed white-walled storehouses and private houses, making you feel as if you have traveled back in time.
