Hello, this is _hiroyuki.ta.

This time, I toured Kannonzaki in Kanagawa Prefecture on my Harley FLSB Sports Glide. Kannonzaki is a cape at the easternmost tip of the Miura Peninsula, and is a spot full of natural and historical charm. It takes about an hour and a half from central Tokyo, so it is recommended as an easy and enjoyable touring course. This time, we will introduce the highlights and gourmet food of Kannonzaki.

Departure point: Central Tokyo

To go to Kannonzaki from central Tokyo, take the Shuto Expressway Route 9 from the Fukagawa Line to the Wangan Route, go via the Yokohama-Yokosuka Road, and exit onto National Route 16. National Route 16 runs along the coast, so you can enjoy a comfortable ride while feeling the sea breeze. Along the way, you can see Maritime Self-Defense Force ships and US Navy bases in Yokosuka City. As you approach Kannonzaki, you can see the Boso Peninsula on the opposite shore.

When we arrived at Kannonzaki, we first headed to Kannonzaki Lighthouse, the symbol of the cape.

Kannonsaki Lighthouse was first lit in 1869 as Japan’s first Western-style lighthouse. The contrast between the beautiful chalk exterior and the blue sea is impressive. If you climb the lighthouse, you can see the entrance to Tokyo Bay. There is a lot of ship traffic, and you can see colorful large tankers and Self-Defense Force destroyers. A short walk from the lighthouse is a cave called Gongen-do. There is a legend that Gyoki Bodhisattva killed a large snake here.

Kannonzaki Park, located a short distance from the Kannonzaki Lighthouse, is a park rich in nature that has both the charm of the sea and the mountains. The park has a promenade, observation deck, and barbecue area. You can also trace the history of Kannonzaki, which was fortified from the Meiji period to the Showa period. There are remains of artillery batteries and redoubts, and you can tour the defense facilities of the time. There is also a monument to fallen sailors and a war memorial in the park.

Materia kettle bouillabaisse specialty store

Materia, a restaurant located in Kannonzaki Park, is a rare restaurant that specializes in kettle bouillabaisse. Based on the concept of “this is how European fishermen would have enjoyed it on their boats,” we offer bouillabaisse using local fish and wild clams. The soup is in a kettle and you pour it yourself. There are three flavors: local seafood bouillabaisse, Edomae bouillabaisse, and meat bouillabaisse. The inside of the restaurant is stylish and has a great view, but the outdoor terrace seating is even better. Lunch while looking out at the blue sea with the Boso Peninsula clearly visible is something special.
